Only have a day to spare? No problem, We’ve got you. These one day focus courses build on each other to form a detailed understanding of key survival and wilderness living concepts.
General Concepts of Survival: A one-day taste of things to come - an intro course of the absolute essentials of wilderness survival - food, fire, water, shelter. Plus a look into the “adaptive mindset” and few other tasty tidbits of knowledge! This is a great primer course for the more in-depth (longer) courses.
Focus on Fire: A day focusing upon and gaining an understanding of the science of this most vital life-saving skill, the psychological and physiological effects of fire, expedient methods to start a fire, types of tinder, kindling and fuel, fire lays, char, friction fire, flint and steel, etc. A very hands-on course! Plan to get dirty and smelly!
Focus on Shelter: Without a shelter in Canada, you’ll die! It’s a simple as that. A day of learning the types of emergency shelters and their methods of construction, as well as expedient shelters you can carry with you, and some basic knots and lashings! Focus will be upon the “raised bed lean-to” shelter and the “super-shelter”.
Focus on Knife Skills: The knife is the most important tool you’ll take into the bush, apart from your brain. In this course, you’ll learn knife safety, the types of knives and their intended uses, knife construction, suitability for task, and maintenance in the field and at home. You’ll learn the grips for the different applications, how to cut the various types of notch, and interesting alternate uses for the knife. This course is a must-have for anyone heading to the bush, to make the best use of this most versatile tool!
Focus on Cordage: Whether man-made or natural, cordage is a very important commodity in the bush. This course focuses on the various sources and uses of cordage, as well as its manufacture from natural plant fibers. You’ll learn how to make twists, plaits, whips, knots and lashings. You’ll learn the six essential bush knots and have lots of time to practice all of the skills taught.
Focus on Foraging: Foraging is a vital skill in a survival context, as well as a satisfying and fulfilling pastime. In this course you’ll learn the survival foraging mindset, the foraging rules, as well as how to identify plants, the uses for edibles and medicinals, cautions and warnings, food preparation and general foraging for other survival items, like firewood, water sources, and preparation and treatment.
Predator Awareness: “Lions and tigers and bears, oh my!” This will be a day emersed in learning to identify large predators, their habitat, their behavior, and how to respond if you encounter them. What to do during a bear encounter could mean the difference between you coming out of the bush alive or not coming out of the bush at all. We’ll talk about the environment and your behavior in it, the effects of bear spry, the use of firearms, and the use of body language to deter bear attacks.
